Maoz Bests National Record in Israel

Without much fanfare, our own Maoz Alsberg sneaked away to his native country on Valentines Day to compete in the 2020 Masters Winter Championships in Netanya, Israel. This short course meters meet is an annual event around this time of year and draws international competitors far and wide.

We say ‘sneaked’ for a reason. We usually have to extract bits and bites from Maoz over the course of several weeks prior to a competition in order to ascertain what he is up to, and this trip was no exception.

His mission? To go after the National Record in the 50 meter backstroke (50-54 age group). Did he beat the mark? Yes!! His time: 30.84. Will his name appear in the record books in Israel for this accomplishment? Well, it’s complicated…

Look for heat winner in blue TWIM cap!

It would seem the organizers of this meet are very stingy when it comes to who is regarded as an Israeli swimmer in record attempts, and surprisingly, Maoz failed their test this time around.

Mr. Alsberg has this aura about him when it comes to his background. Again, we have extracted bits and bites about his past over several years of talking with him. It seems he served in his country’s military there for a good chunk of his young life and has been involved with protecting some of the highest ranking officials in Israel. Rumor has it you can spot him in the background of past pictures of the Prime Minister, for example.

Congratulations, Maoz, on besting this record in the 50m Back!!!

Now, how about a call to the Prime Minister?
