TWIM at the 2024 Anacortes “March Madness” Meet!

Two TWIM competitors, Dave Scott and Dan Underbrink, made our way to Anacortes last Sunday, March 10th, for the “March Madness” swim meet. Dan was accompanied by wife Mary (Lake Washington Masters).

All three of us pulled a swimming double-header for the weekend! Dan was deep into the organization and execution of TWIM’s latest Swim Clinic, a Stroke Development Clinic, Presented by USMS Coach Bill Brenner. Mary was one of about 40 attendees at that clinic, and Dave started his weekend at the “Spring Ahead” SCM Meet in Oregon City, Oregon – quite a commute, Dave!

TWIM’s Kerry Ness was dealing with shoulder damage and was not swimming on Sunday, but he made the short commute from his home to watch and support teammates. Thanks, Kerry!

Huge thanks to Meet Director, Jenny Claridge for bringing this event to us. Jenny was also part of the weekend double-header. She was another swimmer at the TWIM Clinic! Thanks also to Meet Referee, Heather Brennan, and all of the Anacortes staff, meet officials, and a host of volunteers.

For the first time in recent memory (I think this was my 12th Anacortes meet) Fidalgo Pool was set up for Short Course Yards! I love that Jenny and crew chose to mix it up this way! The SCM meet has always been fun, but this new format (for me) brought its own fun details.

Fidalgo Pool set up in SCY Orientation

What did I like? It seems like the lighting is better at the SCY end of the pool. The direction of the roof design made a lot more sense for a backstroke swimmer, and my fear that it was too shallow was unfounded. We dove into 4.5 feet of water and the bottom quickly sloped down to 5.5 feet deep.

Now, as my friend Scott would say, on to what happened in the Wet Stuff!

Dave started his meet with a first-place finish in the 100-yard breaststroke. He followed that up with another first in the 200-yard breaststroke. This was Dave’s second 200 breaststroke of the weekend! Meters in Oregon City, and yards in Anacortes! Nice performance, Dave!

Dave’s final event was the 100-yard Individual Medley. It was possibly the most exciting race finish of the day! Dave, about a body length behind at the final turn, really turned up the volume on the freestyle leg of the race! He rapidly closed the gap, finishing just 0.02 seconds behind het winner, Adelynn Peterson!

Dave’s 100 IM, an exciting race!

Dan swam the 100 and 200 breaststroke (nowhere near as quickly as Dave!). In addition, Dan swam the 100 and 200 backstroke and the 200 and 500 freestyle events. Why drive all the way to Anacortes, and not get some yardage in, right?

Dan’s backstroke warm-up! (I have a picture like this of me from almost every meet)
Dan woke up just in time for the backstroke start!

Anyway, the only way I won a race was when I was NOT up against friendly rival Jeff Morrison! Anacortes is Jeff’ home pool and he showed us a great day of racing!

Hoping to see many TWIM Swimmers at the April Championship Meet in Federal Way!
